Deals reads a company accounts export, fills the fields, and scores the deal against the criteria you wrote, with the weights you gave them. It reports 0 to 100, and when a gate has not been answered enough, it reports no verdict at all.

Around the score sits the record the fund works in: industries, theses, sourcing, projects and the nine stages a project walks through. The stage is not a field anybody edits. It moves because an approved gate decision moved it, and there is no stage dropdown on any screen. We did not write a single criterion: a screening model encodes what a fund believes, and a supplier who ships one has quietly made the investment decision.

A gate is a question worth stopping for: is this worth a call, is it worth a model, is it worth a bid. Each gate holds the criteria you decided it holds, each criterion carries the weight you gave it, and a person rates each one 1 to 5. The gate reports the weighted mean times twenty, so 0 to 100.

Move one weight and the ranking changes, which means the weights are the investment policy. They live in the model, loaded as data. The code that averages them does not know what any of them mean, and that is on purpose.

A person can hold five levels in their head and defend the one they picked. A free 0 to 100 field invites a 73 that nobody can explain. So the human input is coarse on purpose, and only the reported figure is fine grained.

Some facts are not a bad mark, they are a no: outside the mandate, wrong ownership, a seller who will not sell. Those are kill criteria, kept as a separate list, and the ones that can be read from the accounts fire on their own.

A single company accounts export goes in and the record comes out filled: identity, the year series, and the figures derived from them. Nothing is retyped, so nothing is retyped wrong, and every stored figure carries the basis it was read on.

The score is still 90 and is still correct. What changed is that the page no longer prints it in green next to a fully diligenced 82.

Out the other side: a six sheet workbook, because a deal leaves the tool and goes into a meeting. Numbers export as numbers, never as text like "13,1 M€", since the first thing anyone does with a deal sheet is sum a column. Those are three screens over one list with three filters, and keeping them apart is how a record ends up disagreeing with itself. The same went for the four library screens, which are one catalogue with a view switch.

Each is a product decision with a cost, and none is needed to answer the question the system exists for, which is why this deal is where it is.

The vocabulary is theirs and it is checked, not copied. Twenty nine lists are compared option by option, and in order, against the sheet they wrote, down to the long dash inside one of the labels. That comparison runs in the test suite rather than in somebody's eyes, which is the one thing a spreadsheet cannot do for them.

Documents are not uploaded here. The record stores the link, because the original already lives where the fund has its permissions, its versions and its search. A gate is closed until the document that stage is waiting on has been approved. With the gate closed, an advance is refused by the panel, refused again by the server even if the request is forged, and refused a third time by a constraint in the database, so it cannot be written by hand in SQL either.

An advance lands on the next stage and only the next one. The order is a tested table, and the last stage has no next, which is the honest way to say a funnel ends. The emergency hatch, if the panel ever broke, is a patch from the command line.

The stage did not change. What changed is that the attempt is now part of the deal's history, and the next person to open it can see that somebody was in a hurry.

Seeded demo deals are scored to 100 % coverage on every gate, which is why none of what follows was visible until one real export went through the real code path. Three bugs, and the worst of them was not in the scoring.

The series came back reversed. The parser assumed the newest year is printed first. That export printed oldest first. Nothing failed: it handed over a reversed series, so the function that takes the latest year took the oldest one. Headcount read 72 instead of 230 and net debt 3,6 M€ instead of 12,3. The fixture was descending only, which is exactly why the bug survived; it now builds the same company both ways and asserts the same output.

A gate answered 30 % of the way reported 90 out of 100, in green. Two cheap criteria answered well, three expensive ones not asked at all. Next to a fully diligenced 82 it read as the better opportunity. The renormalisation was right, because a blank criterion should not drag a gate to zero. The display was what lied. Every gate now carries its coverage, and under the floor the verdict is simply absent.

And the one that mattered: the figures were the group's. The export carried consolidated accounts over three companies, and nothing in the record said so. The deal was sized, and vetoed for falling outside the mandate, on figures that were not the target's. Its own accounts existed and simply were not printed in that export. The parser now records which basis it read, and the basis travels with the figures onto the page.

The acceptance checklist came with the specification. It was copied in word for word and answered one by one against the deployed build, not against an estimate.

Including the two that matter most: the gate stays shut when the stage document is not approved, and a decision that does not belong to a stage is refused even when the request is forged.

Each one carries the half that is missing in its own sentence. One is half by choice: the reason for passing on a deal is required in the form, so there is no later task to chase a blank. Changing that back is a decision, not a fix.
